NPR: Study: Blacks Routinely Excluded From Juries

A study by the non-profit Equal Justice Initiative reveals widespread racial discrimination in jury selection over eight southern states.

A guaranteed right is a jury of one's peers.

African Americans have and are being routinely excluded from participation in the civic duty of sitting on a jury as a peer of the defendant.  With this study there is evidence of systematic removal of African Americans as potential jurors throughout southern states, with some southern counties excluding eight out of ten qualified African American jurors.  It is, however, important to note that North Carolina was NOT one of the southern states in the study.
